Dambulla

From Heritance Kandalama the giant golden Buddha outside the entrance to this 340m-high rock temple is visible.

The caves’ history dates back to the 1st century BC, when King Walagamba, defeated at Anuradhapura, took refuge in one for 14 years. When he regained the throne, he turned five of the caves into shrines.

The caves include a reclining Buddha 15 meters long and another 150 meters life-size Buddhist statues. Many of the paintings in the temple date back to the 19th century
