MINNERIYA/KAUDULLA NATIONAL PARK

Distance from hotel: 40 km or 55 km

minneriya

The Minneriya/Kaudulla National Park includes a 249 square km reservoir, built by King Mahasen about 15 centuries ago. In the dry months from August to October, more than 300 wild elephants gather on the shores of the reservoir. This gathering is the highlight of the National Park and is one the largest in the wild anywhere in the world.

SIGIRIYA

Distance from hotel: About 32 km

sigiriya

The spectacular Sigiriya (Lion Rock) rock fortress was built in the 5th century AD, by King Kashyapa. It is a wonder of ancient engineering, art and culture.
The palace complex at the foot of the rock still has the remains of four indoor swimming pools where the king’s 500 concubines bathed. The palace structure was built with complex water arteries in the walls that provided natural air conditioning in the hot climate.

DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE

Distance from hotel: About 13 km

dambulla

From Heritance Kandalama the giant golden Buddha outside the entrance to this 340m-high rock temple is visible. The caves’ history dates back to the 1st century BC, when King Walagamba, defeated at Anuradhapura, took refuge in one for 14 years. When he regained the throne, he turned five of the caves into shrines.

ANURADHAPURA

Distance from hotel: About 77 km

anuradapuraya

Anuradhapura, founded in the 4th century BC, is the cradle of Buddhist civilisation in Sri Lanka. The city is one of the archaeological wonders of the world. It is home to the 2,300-year-old sacred bo tree, the Sri MahaBodhiya. It is also the location of the largest stupas of the ancient world – the Ruwanweliseya, the Jethawanaramaya and the Abhayagiriya.

POLONNARUWA

Distance from hotel: About 88 km

12

The ancient sacred city of Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries. In its heyday, the 6km of city walls housed hundreds of people.
Colossal buildings and statues, both Buddhist and Hindu, include the palace of King Parakumbahu, the “swaying columns” of LataMandapa, the shrine of Lankatilaka and the amazing relief sculptures of Gal Viharaya.
