Heritance Kandalama Recognised Once Again by the MICHELIN Guide in 2026

Heritance Kandalama has once again been recognised by the MICHELIN Guide in 2026, reaffirming its position among a distinguished collection of hotels celebrated for their character, design and guest experience.

The renewed recognition marks another significant milestone for a property that has, for more than three decades, remained one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive expressions of architecture, nature and responsible hospitality.

Designed by Deshamanya Geoffrey Bawa, Heritance Kandalama is set in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, overlooking Kandalama Lake and surrounded by the forested landscape of Dambulla. Rather than imposing itself upon the site, Bawa designed the property to respond directly to its setting. The building follows the natural contours of the land, working around existing rock and vegetation while opening its spaces to light, air and expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

While Bawa’s work is often associated with Tropical Modernism, Kandalama reflects the more place-responsive architectural language that came to define his mature work, shaped by climate, terrain, local materials and the realities of Sri Lanka itself.

Today, that relationship with nature remains fundamental to the identity of Heritance Kandalama. Set within a 211-acre protected forest with high levels of biodiversity, the property continues to support a natural space where wildlife and architecture coexist in balance. Conservation-oriented operations, nature education priorities, sustainable hospitality practices and a no-interference approach to wildlife encounters further reinforce the property’s commitment to protecting its surrounding environment.

Heritance Kandalama’s environmental approach is also supported by internationally recognised standards. The property holds ISO 14001:2015 certification and Travelife Gold certification, reflecting a long-standing commitment to environmental management and responsible operations. It is also LEED certified, having earned certification in 2000, becoming the first LEED-certified building outside the United States and the world’s first LEED-certified hotel.

Its impact also extends beyond the natural landscape. Through local employment, skills development, community engagement and sourcing from surrounding villages, Heritance Kandalama demonstrates how hospitality can contribute meaningfully to the communities around it. This connection between environmental stewardship, local opportunity and guest experience continues to shape the property’s approach to responsible tourism.

The MICHELIN Guide recognition in 2026 adds another chapter to a story that began more than three decades ago. From Bawa’s architecture and the surrounding forest to the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Heritance Kandalama continues to offer an experience defined by place rather than convention.

Its continued inclusion in the MICHELIN Guide reinforces the enduring relevance of a property where architecture, nature, culture and hospitality have been brought together with remarkable sensitivity.
