Polonnaruwa

The ancient sacred city of Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries. In its heyday, the 6km of city walls housed hundreds of people.

Colossal buildings and statues, both Buddhist and Hindu, include the palace of King Parakumbahu, the “swaying columns” of LataMandapa, the shrine of Lankatilaka and the amazing relief sculptures of Gal Viharaya.

The vast artificial tank of ParakramaSamudraya reservoir (Sea of Parakrama) covers an area of 23 square km and was the source of the city’s water.

A helpful museum and visitor centre explains the history.
